Foot Orthotic Management

Foot Orthoses or 'orthotics' are innersoles that fit into most styles footwear, from running shoes to hiking and football boots, men's and women's business shoes and  school shoes. Depending upon what the Podiatrist is trying to achieve an orthotic can provide support and cushioning as well as helping to redistribute the force and pressure evenly across the foot.

Orthotics are classified as either 'off the shelf' or custom and both come made of various materials from EVA through to polypropylene plastic.

An 'Off the Shelf' orthotic comes pre made to a neutral foot model relating to your foot size. Often wedges paddings and covers can be added to customise for an individuals comfort or support needs.

A custom orthotic is designed  by the Podiatrist from an impression of the patients foot. This is often taken via a 3D image or plaster cast. This orthotic type gives greater control to the Podiatrist as the orthotic is made bespoke to the patients foot size / shape requirements. Both orthotic types have their advantages which can be discussed at your consultation if orthotic management is to be considered.

When considering orthotic therapy as a component of treatment some factors need to be considered (see below). These will be discussed and outlined at your consultation.

  • When, where and how often can or will orthoses be utilised.

  • Is your current footwear and footwear patterns suitable for orthotic intervention.

  • Will your treatment plan complement orthotic therapy?

  • What type of orthotic is best suited to my case
