Footwear Assessment & Advice

Footwear is designed to support and cushion our feet when standing, walking and exercising. Different activates and sports require different footwear needs and its important that you get the right advice  before commencing your sport / activity or purchase. The chance of injury can be increased if your shoes are not designed for your activity, the conditions, or to your foot mechanics. ie Whilst looking similar a netball shoe is designed differently to a running shoe in that it helps to protect against netball specific movements.

Inappropriate or worn out footwear can lead to excessive or altered foot pressures, this footwear lacks the padding and support that they once had needed to protect our feet from damage.

Wearing inappropriate footwear or having wrong footwear patterns is often seen to exacerbate existing problems, pain or dysfunction in the feet and lower limb. Ill fitting or wrong sizing footwear is also a major contributor to pressure sites, blackened and ingrown toenails, corns and calluses to our feet. Often basic footcare principles and minor in shoe modifications are all that is required to help alleviate.

There is a direct relationship between footwear and orthotic intervention and its effectiveness on the lower limb, so its important that we consider footwear as a major contributor to treatment in most conditions.
